Salt Lake County Divorce Mediation
Settle custody, support and property outside the courtroom, with the Utah rules that apply to a Salt Lake County divorce.
Divorce mediation for Salt Lake County couples
Divorce mediation in Salt Lake County works the way it does anywhere in Utah: you and your spouse meet with a neutral mediator, settle parenting time, child support, alimony, the house, retirement accounts and debts, and turn the result into a written agreement the court can adopt. It usually takes a few sessions over a few weeks. If your spouse has already filed and answered, Utah requires at least one mediation session before a contested divorce can go to trial, so many Salt Lake County couples mediate after filing as well as before.
This page is for couples in Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Sandy, West Jordan, South Jordan, Murray, Draper, Taylorsville, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights and the rest of the county. Questions that often come up here include dividing a home with significant equity, parent-time for children in different school districts after one parent moves, and dividing retirement accounts from large Salt Lake employers.
Where a Salt Lake County divorce is filed
A divorce for a Salt Lake County resident is filed with the Salt Lake County District Court, part of Utah's Third Judicial District. You can file a new case by email at [email protected], and the clerk's office is at (801) 233-9700, Monday to Friday. You file your own documents; check the court's current hours and requirements on utcourts.gov before you file.
Utah rules that apply in every county: one spouse must have lived in the county where the case is filed for at least three months before filing, and the court cannot enter a decree until at least 30 days after filing unless it waives the wait. Parents of minor children must complete the divorce orientation and parenting courses.
